"SEARCHING FOR SIGNS OF LIFE"
Installation, Yager Museum / 1999 / Bronze, glass and sleds

After viewing photographs from the Hubbell telescope and reflecting on recent discussions about Creationism that dispute Darwinian theory, I decided to produce an installation that contemplates the origins of life. The installation can be viewed as space with crafts moving through it in search of the origins of life. Two brain sperms are strapped to sleds, and glide through uncertain terrain while hurling toward new and unusual places. These places contain unknown possibilities. The travelers are excited about the possibility of discovery. The galaxies each contain a silica-based life form constricted by ancient seeds and branches; these are fossilized memories of past lives. The travelers choose to ignore these fossils. They are bound by their beliefs and fearful of the unknown around them. Maybe through contact they will each find answers.
