HONORING ANCESTORS Project

During the week of May 5, 2003, African-American Artist, Jean Lacy worked with the twelve students in the Civil Rights Movement Seminar, taught by Associate Professor of History, Edythe Ann Quinn, Ph.D.  All semester the students collected "found objects" for inclusion in their shrines to honor some aspect of the Civil Rights/Black Power Movements and their personal history and/or response.  On Friday, May 9, the students presented their artwork to the community in a program at Yager Museum. The Study Center of The Yager Museum exhibited their shrine artwork throughout Summer 2003. In addition to the abstracts in this catalog, the students also wrote research/response papers based on their experiences in conceptualizing their shrines, collecting the found objects, creating the artwork, and setting it in the context of the Civil Rights/Black Power Movements and Art History.  ENTER THE EXHIBIT HERE

Jean Lacy's visit and her shrine workshop and classroom presentations and the "Honoring Ancestors" program on May 9, 2003 were sponsored by: U.S. Ethnic Studies, Gender Issues, Women's Studies, the History Department, The Yager Museum and in part by The Foreman Creative and Performing Arts Series. Hartwick College Art student, Alexis Mays, '04, graciously provided selections from her own art for the background for our exhibit.  Mr. Nathaniel "Lennie" Lacy also assisted his mother in her travels, workshops and presentations here at Hartwick College. We thank Lennie Lacy, Alexis Mays and all sponsoring programs for their contributions.  We especially thank Jean Lacy for her incredible spirit that made this entire process possible.
