Galileo

These telescopes were made by Galileo between 1610 and 1640.  They are located in the Museum of Science in Florence, Italy.  Galileo ground his own lenses because, in 1610 he was the only human being who knew how to make the correct power lenses. They are reputed to be the only surviving telescopes of the many he made in his workshop.

It was with these telescopes, or ones like them that Galileo changed our view of the universe by observing the phases of Venus.   Galileo saw not only the crescent, but the all of the other phases including a nearly full disk.  This would not be possible unless Venus was in orbit around the Sun.
