The History of the Show

O.K.! So the show's pretty lame--oldies on a college radio station. Long ago we had a few listeners. Students at the college were familiar with 50s & 60s music because their parents played it at home. Today the parents play their 70s music and the college students think their grandparents listened to Elvis--actually they did!

We started the show in January 1979 with DJs Dr. Rock (retired from radio to write about rocks), the Rockin' Robin (got a real job and left radio), Charlie the "K" (still pretending it is 1958 and refusing to believe that bell bottom pants are not coming back) and the Wolfman (going strong on the air but we have not told him that Elvis is dead.)

We put on special shows on occasion (when we feel like it and get in gear to put it together.) Years ago each spring we would haul our volumes of records to the station and have a special request night. On those special nights every song was a requested song. (We refused to play anything by the Doors as their songs were too long.) We don't do request nights anymore-- too old to carry the records! On occasion Dr. Rock would put on a surfing music special or a car song special. Once or twice a year the Rockin' Robin would have a special show of protest songs or folk songs. Charlie the "K" and the Wolfman had (and still have) special highlighting all-girl-group music or perhaps music from the 30s and 40s, the big band era. There are special programs for Halloween, often featuring the reprise of the 1938 Orson Wells broadcast of War of the Worlds. Usually the last show of the fall term is the Christmas special; you can't go wrong with barking dogs. Some of the other specials were less memorable; the three hours of transportation related songs(trains, cars, boats etc. ) was one that was never repeated. One of our favorites is the three hour Thanksgiving show each year featuring classic rock 'n' roll songs about food. (Think about all the possibilities; turkey, potatos, gravy, cherry pie, poke salad, wine [spo-de-oh-doh)], popcicles, etc.) The last show of the spring term is the "Graduation/Here Comes Summer Extravaganza". Charlie the "K" and the Wolfman read the name of every graduating Hartwick College senior on the air and play a number one song from the year and month they were born. Enter the year of this coming May (2000, 2001, 2002 or etc.) and press the calculate button.  This May we will have done the Graduation/Here Comes Summer Extravaganza show times. And this year we will be playing number one songs from around the year .

One year Dr. Rock gave weekly reports on the new dorm, Harrad Hall. The Wolfman & Charlie the "K" almost got an elephant into the studio one night for the radio presentation of the decade but failed because the hall door was too small. Charlie the "K"s radio card tricks were the highlight of the spring season a few years ago. The juggling was less well received by the radio audience. It's all good fun and nobody gets hurt (unless you count . . . well, that's another story.)

When we can we have a comedy spot at 7:30 (early Bob Newhart, Shelly Berman, Vaughn Meader, Bill Cosby, etc.) We try to play a big band record toward the end of the show and an Elvis song at the beginning.

We end each show with Jerry Lee Lewis' Rockin' My Life Away. It seems appropriate!
