Fragment of sixteenth-century painted glass,
recovered from the ruins of a
private chapel in England but originally part of one
of the great windows
installed in the Premonstratensian Abbey Church of Steinfeld in
Germany by
Abbot Thomas von Eschenhausen (1457-1529). Passing
references to these
windows in the Sertum Steinfeldense Norbertinum (1712)enabled
Mr. Somerton,
the noted antiquary, to discover and decipher certain cryptic inscriptions
hinting
at the existence of a buried treasure. At the time
of writing, all attempts to
recover the treasure have, alas, met with failure.
